Enjoy your break, but don’t help burglars!!
In this current age of social media, it’s difficult to resist the temptation to share our work, holiday and big night out plans/photos with our friends and family, however there is a down side to this practice – there are villains out there that will be paying keen attention to the details that are being posted.
Our top tips to help keep your home safe from burglars who use social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc) to find potential targets:
Privacy Settings: Lockdown your social media privacy settings using privacy shortcuts, this will help you to control who can find you on Facebook etc. Most importantly who can see your posts and who can contact you.
Friend Requests: Be very careful when accepting friend requests from people you don’t really know, every stranger is a potential burglar.
Personal Information: Don’t share personal information such as home address and phone number on social media as this will increase your vulnerability to potential burglary.
Check-in: As much as you’re excited, don’t ‘check-in’ on social media when you’re at airports, hotels or from your holiday destination. Any potential burglar will see this as an opportunity to visit your empty house.
Photos: Don’t share details about any upcoming travel plans or post your holiday snaps whilst you are still away. Posting photos of you lay on a beach confirms that you are away from your house for the entirety of your holiday. If you really can't stop posting your photos, add them to an album and share that only with your close friends and relatives.
Daily Activity: Avoid sharing information about your daily routines, including work schedule, Gym class and nights out.
Location: Turn off your social media location feature; you can also turn off your phone’s location function to make your personal information much more secure.

Government statistics prove that homes fitted with a burglar alarm are less likely to be burgled especially when empty. Homes with the added back-up of security cameras are even more unlikely to be broken in to. Cameras provide visual evidence of any suspicious activity meaning burglars are unlikely to take the risk of being caught on film.
